Biography and Early Life

Ottey was born as the fourth of seven children of Hubert and Joan Ottey. Her mother inspired her to become an athlete. At a very young age her mother gave her a book on athletics, written by an American sprinter, Charly Green. She graduated from the Ruseas and Vere Technical high schools. There she also regularly competed barefoot.

Her athletics inspiration came after listening to an interview given by Jamaican athlete Don Quarrie during the final at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. Her sports career started when she was offered a scholarship by the University of Nebraska and emigrated to the United States in 1979. “If I could do it all over again, I would play it differently,” she says. ‘I didn’t even know where Nebraska was and was shocked when I had to train on a frozen surface in the winter. What a difference with Jamaica! However, I was so overwhelmed by the offer that it did not even occur to me that there were perhaps other, and probably more interesting, possibilities. “

Ottey studied art and design for four years there. After her studies, she moved to California, where she married Nat Page, a 400 m hurdler in 1984. The marriage failed after a period of three years.

Ottey represented Jamaica at the Pan American Games 1979, where she won a bronze medal in the 200 m.
